Step 1. Decide Exactly What You Want to Know

An easy way to get started is to formulate in plain language a statement  or a question that you want the data to answer. The more detail you add to the statement or question, the more precisely you will be able to define your query.

 

Scenario

Suppose you want to hold a special luncheon for families who were top contributors to the Air Conditioning fund. You are defining "top contributors" as those who gave more than $100 to the fund. You need to know the names and addresses of these individuals so that you can send the luncheon invitations directly to the givers' homes.

Question

Our question is as follows:

What are the names and addresses of families who contributed more than $100 in 2013 to the Air Conditioning fund?
